The man reason is that Winchester wanted to get into the semi-auto shotgun market but couldn’t infringe on Browning’s patents. They also didn’t want to pay royalties. Well, they paid in negative publicity after they released this Model 1911, which would also be nicknamed “The Widow Maker”.
